What We Believe

goals

Sewing and garment construction is viable and we believe much needed vocation especially suited for the current economic difficulties. The skills fostered by sewing, garment construction and fashion design foster craftsmanship, independence and critical thinking. We believe that creativity is innate and needs to be cultivated and nurtured. We assert that some “problem” youth are those in need of learning venues that access this creativity. We believe self-reliance and self –esteem are factors in the rehabilitation of “at risk” youth. So You Can believes that the discipline of garment construction offers a valuable skill set which will have major impact on themselves and their communities. The impact can be effectuated quickly, especially when entrepreneurship is fostered.

So You Can.org believes in creative learning alongside Montessori and Steiner philosophies;
Montessori learning philosophy states that lacing, stringing and weaving help a child’s dexterity. Eye, hand and brain coordination involved in sewing and garment construction allows the child a more fully integrated learning experience.

Rudolph Steiner, founder of the Waldorf schools, believed that creativity is innate in all human beings. By participating in creative opportunities, the child recognizes the capacity to become active participants in creating the future rather than passive onlookers. Steiner believed that learning in interdisciplinary and true learning crosses between academics and varied schools of thought. Sewing is not only a compliment to learning math, from basic counting and measurement skills to geometry, but teaches process thinking and the process of completion, neither of which the importance can be overstated. So You Can believes creative expression, through sewing, fashion design and showcase programs enhances ones perspective of not only him/herself but as their community at large. The ability to find ones inner creative voice leads to a more open minded thinking as well as tolerance of others and their values.
So You Can believes creativity and creative expression are a viable learning modalities. We believe students should be given the opportunity to express themselves in a safe, supportive learning environment. We believe youth and adults that are given positive platforms to develop and showcase their creative talents excel positively in all other aspects of their lives.

So You Can believes many troubled youth are creative learners, and given the opportunity to be creative will become positive community members.
